recording is tough work!!!-lol!

Hey there everyone! This past friday i had alot of fun doing some recording with Bud Buckley. You can see him here on the back of his debut cd "Feel My Love" which you can purchase at his website, budbuckley.com or cdbaby.com. Yeah, i know...i was plugging the cd, but why not? I think it's music you would enjoy, and i love sharing the info and directing you to some good, good music! Bud, helped me start recording a couple of my songs....one being, "Sometimes", and the other one, "Say Goodbye"....For the first time in my life i had to play along to a drum machine. If you have been reading my blog for some time, you'll know that i'm really a drummer. I had always tinkered with a guitar since i was ten years old, but never took a lesson. Everything i knew was self taught and by ear. But i wanted to learn the "real" way, and i found Bud in a local newspaper article. When i met him, i found out that we graduated from the same college. He knew the area where i grew up very well, and we had quite a bit in common, especially our love for music. I have to say my learning of the guitar has been slower than i have wanted, and it has nothing to do with Bud. Besides working the crummy hours i do at work that leave me barely enough time to do anything around the house, i barely can fit in practice time and also time to write songs and put them together. I end up writing most of my lyrics while i am at work, and having to be there for 10 and a half hours drives me nuts! The reason being, once i get lyrics down and a tune in my head, it's like i NEED to get home NOW and put it together....i'm so afraid i'll forget what i wanted to do by the time i get home. It doesn't help that i have to drive 35 miles to get home too! So, you would think being a drummer, i would have no trouble playing along to a drum machine. WRONG!!! Since i am not as strong on the guitar as i am on the drums, i tend to concentrate on what i'm doing on the guitar and tuning out the drums. And when i do that, i tend to start playing faster than the beat. Then i realize i am rushing it and have to slow down. And that makes the recording not as good as i want. The one thing about me is i am a perfectionist to some degree when it comes to recording. If it isn't close to "perfect", i not willing to accept it completely. I know that "time" is what i need to get used to all the equipment again. I used to play in a rock band but it has been a long time since i last played a gig. So, i have to be patient, which i am not very good at...lol....i want everything to be done in one take and sound exactly the way i want it...lol...and that rarely EVER happens! But i appreciate Bud's patience, and putting up with me being so picky. I know if i listen to what we did friday, i could pick out things i don't like and say, "Let's do it again!".....celebrity musicians or anyone who does a recording must play there songs a billion times before they get it right....well, wait a minute!....I would probably have to play it a billion times, the stars are so talented they could probably do it in a few takes. But it's their "job" basically and they spend hours upon hours perfecting their craft.
Another thing i found out was i was VERY rusty when it comes to singing and doing the proper breathing. I sang in a choir for 16 years(again a long time ago). And although i remember what i am supposed to do, i forget to apply it when i'm actually singing now! In the choir, we were practicing 2-3 times a week....now i sing at home whenever or at karoake....lol!!! Can't say that is really practicing! Well, i found out at Bud's, that I need to get my vocal chords back in shape. I've never been a solo singer. I was more into singing harmony and background. And as much as i would love to write my songs and have others sing and record them, there is always a part of me that wants to do my own stuff too. So, if I ever get a cd of me doing my songs at LEAST halfway decent, that would be for my personal pleasure to share with friends. But if someone else would want to record them, such as my wife(who is an awesome singer), Bud, the Kim Brunners' or serena matthews' of this world or anyone else for that matter, that would be awesome too. I'm loving this time recording at Bud's and my own home too, and hope i can come up with something acceptable enough to share with you all. I've been working on "Sally Won't Wait Forever" as i would like to send that to my dear friend Sally (of Dirty Blog fame), because it seems like she HAS been waiting forever to hear it!.....take care and i hope to have something to share with you all soon!
